How can Columbus ensure its neighborhoods include housing and opportunity for economic mobility for a broad spectrum of people as the city continues to grow?
Breathe new life
ADU is short-hand for “Accessory Dwelling Unit.” Cities such as Portland, Vancouver, San Francisco, even relatively smaller, Boulder, use zoning clearances for ADUs as a way to facilitate re-design on existing lots in order to help expand housing options in increasingly tight housing markets.
Columbus doesn't have this zoning yet, but we're getting there.


Adu Uses
ADUs can serve to expand living or business opportunities. An ADU might be designed to provide housing for aging parents, for college-aged children; to provide simpler living and a rental asset (your house); or, perhaps that fabrication workshop you’ve been dreaming of.
Process
It’s not an overnight process. But it’s deliberate, intentional and life-giving. Expect to spend time with your architect, contractors, and in front of your Neighborhood Area Commissioners, City Development planners, and City Council.
